Five weeks of growth, connection, and self-discovery 💛✨
Over the past five weeks, our wellness program, led by licensed social worker Alyssa Freeman and mindfulness practitioner Mikelle Deck, created a space for students to explore self-awareness, connection, and healthy living in meaningful, hands-on ways. In partnership with Utica University, we welcomed 20 students on campus into a journey focused on both mental and physical well-being.Â
Â
We kicked off Week 1 with an introduction to mindfulness, incorporating gentle yoga to help students slow down, tune into their bodies, and begin building foundational skills for presence and emotional regulation.Â
Â
In Week 2, we shifted into discussions around healthy vs. unhealthy relationships. Students learned how to identify red flags and explored what it means to foster respectful, supportive connections in their lives.Â
Â
Week 3 focused on body image and self-confidence. Through a creative collage activity, students celebrated what makes them unique, filling their boards with positive affirmations and visual reminders of their strengths.Â
Â
Week 4 brought learning into the kitchen, where students practiced healthy eating habits in a fun, interactive way. Together, they prepared garlic naan pizzas, Rice Krispie treats, and no-bake protein balls, blending nutrition education with teamwork and creativity.Â
Â
Finally, in Week 5, students expressed themselves through tie-dye, creating t-shirts in preparation for an exciting upcoming trip to Green Lakes State Park. The program will conclude with a mindfulness hike and a sound bowl meditation in nature, offering a peaceful and reflective end to their experience.Â
Â
This program was more than a series of sessions, it was a space for growth, connection, and self-discovery. We are incredibly proud of the students who showed up each week with openness and courage, and grateful to Young Scholars and our partners to make this all possible for our students.Â
